Sanjay Madnani

Sanjay Madnani is a communication designer, educator, and creative practitioner with over two decades of experience spanning design, development, and higher education. His professional work has focused on Communication for Development (C4D) and Social and Behavior Change Communication (SBCC), where he has designed communication strategies and creative interventions for organizations working across public health, sanitation, education, agriculture, livelihoods, justice, tourism, and international development. A graduate of the National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad, Sanjay's practice encompasses visual communication, storytelling, animation, film, illustration, photography, interaction design, information architecture, comics, puppetry, street theatre, and game and toy design. Prior to entering academia, he spent several years in the creative industry, establishing and leading film design studios in India. This combination of professional practice and social-impact work has shaped his belief that design can serve as a powerful catalyst for understanding, participation, and positive change. As an educator, Sanjay brings industry experience and interdisciplinary perspectives into the classroom, encouraging students to engage critically with design while exploring its social, cultural, and human dimensions. His current interests lie in expanding the reach of design beyond professional practice and positioning it as an accessible way of thinking and problem-solving across disciplines and everyday life. He is particularly interested in advancing design education as a cross-cutting approach that can enrich diverse fields of study and practice. He is currently exploring the origins and design characteristics of the Devanagari script through a practice-based research lens.
