The University organized a Design Orientation Program for the academic session 2023-24 for the School of Design. The Orientation Program continued for a week between 12-16 June 2023 with a lot of fun, engaging, and exciting activities, motivational lectures, and workshops.
The Orientation week followed a schedule for each day. The day started with a Commencement Lecture by a Design Educator, Designer, or Design Industry veteran. Students then attended workshops that were conducted in association with Pidilite. The workshops that helped the students to enhance their skills were Animal Planter, Gond Art, Dhokra Art, Lippan Art, and Tote Bag Painting. The workshops were organized in the presence of instructors from Pidilite and Design faculty members. Each evening, for the entire week, there were fun and engaging activities for the students. Below are details for each day of the Orientation Week 2023-24.
On Day 1 of the Orientation week, 12 June 2023, the commencement lecture was delivered by Chandrashekhar Vyavahare, CEO, Futuring Design, Pune. He shared his experience of starting Futuring Design, works done, and design thoughts. He inspired students with his advice on design aptitude. The students then attended workshops conducted in association with Pidilite. The workshops were followed by a Treasure Hunt. In the evening, Shri Bharat Bala, an acclaimed and award-winning film director, addressed the Design Orientation Program. Shri Bala talked about his work Vande Mataram with A R Rehman, Lata Mangeshkar, and other maestros. Shri Bala also shared his approach, thoughts, ideas, and insights about his acclaimed award-winning works with aspiring designers.
On Day 2 of the Orientation week, 13 June 2023, the commencement lecture was delivered by Manisha Phadke, Design Educator, Ex-Dean NMIMS. She emphasized the role of behavior, discipline, and time management in an individual to achieve success in the design profession. The students then attended workshops that were conducted in association with Pidilite. The workshops were followed by a team-building activity, Canvas of Unity, by NSD. In the evening, the students starting a new academic journey had the opportunity to engage in an interactive motivational talk by Abha Maryada Bhatt, India's first internationally acclaimed woman motivational speaker. She shared various anecdotes about her life, her journey, and her stories which set a very positive tone for the evening. She focused on success and how young minds can be geared toward achieving their full potential.
On Day 3 of the Orientation week, 14 June 2023, the commencement lecture was delivered by Siddharth Kabra, Founder, Monsoonfish Design, Pune. He shared his thoughts about his journey of starting Monsoonfish Design, his work done, and his experience with design consulting across sectors. The students interacted with him and asked questions pertaining to research and a career in UX Design. The students then attended workshops conducted in association with Pidilite. The workshops were followed by a team-building activity, Design Thinking Challenge - The School Bag Project by NSD. In the evening, the students engaged themselves in a musical night by Beyond Horizon, the Experimental Rock Band from Indore. The band performed their experimental and melodious compositions that kept the audience engaged throughout the evening. The evening was filled with talented student performances, music, fun, and amazing vibes.
On Day 4 of the Orientation week, 15 June 2023, the commencement lecture was delivered by Nupur Dube, Founder VisionVibes. She held an interactive lecture with the students on empathy for all stakeholders in design. She spoke about the challenges students face in college and shared tips to tackle them positively. She pressed on the requisite of an enquiring and inquisitive nature that will help the students to deep-dive into understanding any concept. The students then attended workshops conducted in association with Pidilite. The workshops were followed by a team-building activity, Leadership Spotlight, by NSD. In the evening, the students were engaged in a laugh riot with the Guest of the Evening, Sorabh Pant. Stand-up comic and writer Sorabh Pant set the stage rolling with his timed humor. He shared his life stories and enthralled everyone in attendance with his humor and wit. The faculty members, staff, and students enjoyed the evening filled with laughter and comedy.
On Day 5 of the Orientation week, 16 June 2023, the commencement lecture was delivered by Padma Raj, Fashion Designer, Ralph Lauren. He delivered an interactive and interesting lecture for the students on Fashion Design. He emphasized the point that Fashion Designers are Thought Leaders. He shared his journey right from his college days to his present days in the industry. The students asked him questions about pursuing a career in Fashion Design and how to upskill themselves. The students then attended workshops conducted in association with Pidilite. In the evening, the students dazzled the ramp at the Fashion Show. The freshers took this opportunity and showcased their talent at the ramp. The Fashion show was organized in four rounds, where Fashion Design students presented their collections. It was followed by a Freshers' Party where students danced, vibed, and enjoyed the night to the tunes of the DJ.
After an engaging Orientation week and a rocking Freshers Party, Samagati took the foundation year students on an experiential voyage to Ahilya Bai Holkar's city, Maheshwar.
